ExtraTorrent Unexpectedly Shuts Down!

Popular torrenting site ExtraTorrent has unexpectedly shutdown yesterday, marking the end of another well known name in the pirating community.

ExtraTorrent confirmed the news with a message posted on their homepage. When visiting ExtraTorrent.cc, Extra.to, and all other official ET domains, users are now presented with the following message pictured below.

“ExtraTorrent has shut down permanently.”

“ExtraTorrent with all mirrors goes offline.. We permanently erase all data. Stay away from fake ExtraTorrent websites and clones. Thx to all ET supporters and torrent community. ET was a place to be….”

ExtraTorrent was the second largest torrent site on the internet, in behind only ThePirateBay. Their disappearance marks the latest in a string of popular Torrent sites to fall over the past year. The most notable being KickassTorrents, Torrentz, TorrentHound, Bitsnoop, and What.cd.

Like other streaming and torrenting sites, ExtraTorrent is blocked by internet providers in many countries and has angered many rightsholders, who in turn pressure hosting and domain providers to shut them down.

The operators of the site have declined to comment on exactly why they have chosen to shut down, but they did confirm that their release group ETRG has shut down as well.

When speaking with TorrentFreak, an admin at ExtraTorrent also revealed that, “Ettv and Ethd could remain operational if they get enough donations to sustain the expenses and if they people handling it ready to keep going.”

It’s currently unclear if legal pressure prompted the unexpected decision to go offline.

EverydayElectronics will keep you updated on the situation if any new details unfold. It’s important to note we always recommend using a high tier VPN service such as IPVanish to ensure you are protected while downloading torrents.
